Year 1 and 3 Show and Tell

Year 1 and Year 3 enjoyed a joint show and tell session when one of the children brought in a sky lantern.
These are basically a paper balloon which when lit fills with hot air causing it to float off by itself, similar to the principle of a hot-air balloon.
We took the opportunity to discuss the science about how the lantern works, how the air is heated and becomes lighter than the air outside causing it to rise up.
The children were really impressed with the lantern and there was much speculation about where it might land.
